Temporary Car Scratch Remover?

This is the latest installment of my Q&A forum.   Read what Ren of California wrote.

Ren says “I just bought a new Jeep from the dealer and I noticed a scratch on the door.  I asked the salesman to fix it and when I came to pick it up it was gone.  However with all the rain in California lately I just noticed that the scratch came back, what did they do to my car and will I have to redo the scratch every time it rains”?

I mention “temporary” fix products on my website and in my FREE Scratch Remover mini course but I figured it is important enough to talk about again.  I firmly believe in consumer education so that people like you who care about how their car looks can make a good decision about which car scratch remover product to buy and get the most value possible for your hard earned money.  These days who has money or time to waste on substandard products or companies who will not stand behind their product?

There are numerous scratch “remover” products available today that are not “removers” at all, in fact they are temporary “cover-ups” that hide a scratch and make it less visible.  When the car is subjected to a few good rain storms (like Ren’s Jeep) the cover up washes out of the scratches and the scratch is back!  Also a few car washes will do the same and wash the temporary cover up out of the scratch.

This type of product is a “temporary” cover-up and has clear silicone fillers which temporarily  fill in the scratches so that they are not visible… until it rains a few times or after a few car washes.  The main ingredient in this type of product, silicone and or low grade wax, is very cheap to manufacture so that is why you may see them for unbelievably cheap prices.  The companies  that sell this type of product know that the Car Scratch Remover market is so big that if you buy their product and are unhappy and never buy it again there are 10 more people right behind you that will be buying it just once too before they find out it was a waste of time.  Don’t think for a minute that they will have someone standing by to answer your questions or help you… and forget about getting advice from someone who works at the store where you bought the product.

You may wonder then, how the heck am I supposed to know which products will be a waste of my hard earned money and most importantly my time.  My lawyer has warned me against naming names therefore what I can tell you is that if the claims sound too good to be true and the price is $20 or less you most likely will be wasting your time and money.

Stay away from ANYTHING “As Seen On TV” which probably goes without saying.   Also check to see if the company is serious about YOUR success by offering personal support after the sale.  There are a few products that cost about $20 that are not cover-ups however typically they will only remove very minor of scratches. Furthermore anything you are able to pick up at the auto parts store or super mart will not be products that you would not find in a pro’s tool box which should tell you something as well.

I am a car guy first and foremost and I am proud to offer the finest Car Scratch Remover on the market with unmatched product support… period.
